The major purpose of the P trap is preventing sewer
gas into the house. The remained water in the trap
will prevent sewer gas back flowing. Namely if there
is no water in the P trap because of siphonage,
all sewer gas will back flow to the house. Many
people are installing P trap for kitchen or lavatory
easily. But there are several points to keep the
code regulations. If you don’t keep these
regulations, the installed P trap will be useless
because of siphonage. As you see in the drawing,
1) Trap arm should not be slopped.
2) Trap arm length is limited.
3) P trap should be bigger than 2” and less
than 4”
4) Trap arm should be connected to sanitary tee.
